Ruben The Bear

Ruben The Bear Visits Silverdale Normal School.

Ruben The Bear came to visit the Junior school on Tuesday 26th  of May, to talk to us about road safety.

Ruben wears bright colours so cars and people can see him, and he stays safe.

His jacket has "traffic light "buttons..

He told us the safe place to cross the road is at a pedestrian crossing, and to look for the traffic lights and the little green man.

We sang a song and danced to help us remember, to stop, look, listen and link before we cross the road

Jillian, Rubens helper, gave every class a bag of games and activities.

This blog was written by the children of Room 11 and Mrs Toombs.

Science Inquiry.

Investigating Rivers and Streams with Miss Cooper

The children brain-stormed all their ideas about rivers and streams

Then we did an experiment to find out what makes water flow fast or slow down a mountain.

We found out that the taller the mountain the faster the water flow, and the lower the slope the slower the flow.

Next we shared  all our observations and asked questions.

How did water get on the planet in the first place?
What if there was no water?
Does water have a colour?
How are rivers and streams made?

After that, we talked about how water causes erosion of the land, and shared our thinking through drama.

We decided that we needed to find out more about the water-cycle.

Lastly, to show our understanding we completed a mixed up water-cycle activity.

What a wonderful week!!  3 great events to share.

Art Road Show:

We had 2 visits to the gallery to look at the artworks, and to do our own sketching.

We looked at lots of different art books.

We sketched some of the artworks.

These are some of our fabulous sketches.

We wrote some "I wonder why?" questions.

What if the  animals in the picture woke up?
Liam

What would it be like if we used 3D glasses to look at the art?
Hamoodi

What if the animals want their claws, feet and beaks back?
Payash

Celebrity Visitor:

What a wonderful role-model and inspiration Daniel Carter was for our children.  We look forward to all the fabulous sports equipment that will be bought with money  Dan presented to the school.

We discussed "What is a Celebrity?" and "What does a Celebrity Do?"

Hillcrest High School Plays:

Every year we go to watch the plays produced by the H.H.S drama students.  The plays are written by the students, and we all had a wonderful time singing and dancing, as we joined in the stories.

Back at school we talked about all the elements that make up a drama.

Road Safety Week

Looking Out For Kids

The children have been thinking about safety and making links to what we learnt earlier in the year about pool and sun safety.

Next we  talked about what "Looking Out For Kids" might mean?

The children explained how parents and teachers warn children about danger and teach them about staying safe

Lastly we talked about all the ways we can be safe on the roads!!

We wrote a description using the seven perspectives (number, colour, place, action, texture, shape and size) about our own bikes.

My Bike

My bike has four wheels and they look like donuts going round and round.  It is pink and the metal frame is  as hard as a rock.  I ride my bike on the grass around my house.  My bike is small and lives
in the shed.

Pasyah

My Bike

My bike has one hard oval seat.  The wheels are big and orange,  It lies in the shed.

Kayla

My Bike

My bike has two amazing shiny wheels.  It lives in the stinky old garage.  It is so pink you can't even look at it.  My bike has a very hard seat and the handle bars are like sticks.  It has very small pedals and the bike is taking me around the house.

We read a very funny story about a goat called "Giddy Goat" who got up lots of mischief.
Here are some  new and interesting words and phrases that we explored.
